Senator Patrick O'Connor shared the following update: "My amendment providing $25,000 to support Maddie’s Promise was passed! Launched in 2019, the nonprofit was started in memory of Hingham resident Maddie McCoy, an 11-year-old girl who bravely faced rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of cancerous tumor of the soft tissue.

Maddie’s Promise works to close the funding gap of rare pediatric cancers. In the past 40 years, over 400 new lifesaving and sustaining opportunities have been created for adult cancers compared to just eight for pediatric cancers. While at Boston Children’s, Maddie made art and wanted to sell it in order to support other cancer patients – she didn’t make a sale, but her sisters and friends took on her mission.

This week marked the third anniversary of Maddie’s passing and Hingham officially marked the day as “Maddie’s Promise Day”. I know the Hingham and South Shore community will continue to remember Maddie and continue the promise."

The town of Hingham Proclamation - The Select Board of Hingham has proclaimed Monday May 23, 2022 as Maddie’s Promise Day. The town urges all citizens to observe the day by emulating the spirit and attitude of Maddie McCoy. Be the change this world needs!

Maddie’s Promise is excited to be learning more about BCC - and is beginning the path to establish a rhabdomyosarcoma - focus on tumor-agnostic treatment is the future of precision medicine.

To celebrate Maddie’s love of Art local community members hosted a used art supply drive. As always wonderful to see the community come together for a something Maddie was so passionate about.

As we approach the end of 2021 I wanted to take a moment to thank you all and share the progress we have made.

What we are doing to #bethechange ?

2021 Highlights:

Maddie’s Promise granted funds to Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute for the Citizen’s Scientist project. This project focuses on developing and testing new Rhabdomyosarcoma drugs for cooperative group trials. The focus is rapid translation by repurposing existing FDA-approved or already clinically-investigated drugs.

Maddie’s Promise also granted funds to the Cold Harbor Springs Lab for Rhabdo and Ewing Sarcoma research. This lab is studying two unique genetic targets found in Rhabdo. The lab is working toward ultimately being able to drug these targets. No drugs have ever been created for Rhabdo so this would truly be a groundbreaking innovation. Ann and her sister had the opportunity to visit the lab this year to meet and talk with the researchers and scientists.

We’ve also teamed up with other Rhabdo family foundations across the country to form the “Rhabdo Coalition.” We meet regularly to talk about current research and changes in the field. Collectively, we have been pushing for improvements in pediatric cancer biobanking. We are beginning to see improvements in this area which is vital to improve the quality of all pediatric cancer research.

As a Rhabdo Coalition, we are also creating a Patient Advocacy website which will provide information for second opinions, clinical trial options, and general support for patients and their families.

We had a great fundraising year to make these efforts possible! We are so grateful for all of your support and contributions in honor and memory of our Maddie.

On June 9, 2021, Maddie’s Promise donated $40,000 to fund cutting-edge rhabdomyosarcoma research in the lab of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor Chris Vakoc. Ann McCoy, Maddie’s mother, and Theresa Buonopane, Maddie’s aunt, presented the check to Vakoc and his team on behalf of the organization.

Maddie’s Promise is a non-profit dedicated to funding research into targeted treatments of pediatric cancers, including rhabdomyosarcoma. The organization is named after Maddie McCoy, who died of rhabdomyosarcoma, and is dedicated to continuing Maddie’s promise to help others and fund research into rare pediatric cancers.

Vakoc studies rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and often fatal form of pediatric cancer derived from connective tissues like muscle and fat. His work, part of the Sarcoma Research Project, aims to understand what causes sarcomas. He uses CRISPR/Cas9 genetic screens, epigenomics, and biochemistry to study how sarcomas form and to identify new therapeutic targets.

“An Evening of Promise” Gala Benefit May 21

Maddie’s Promise Virtual Fundraiser FREE for All to Attend

April 27, Hingham, MA – Maddie’s Promise, a non-profit volunteer organization funding pediatric cancer research, will hold an online gala benefit on Friday, May 21, 7:00-8:00 p.m.  “An Evening of Promise” virtual gala is free to attend and anyone from anywhere can register at  www.maddiespromise.org/annual-gala . Two VIP opportunities are available with a donation of $100, which includes a “100 for a cure” Maddie’s Promise hat by No Wake, or a donation of $500+ for the Mixology Basket (limited to first 50 donations) including signature craft cocktail kit for two, a pre-gala mixology session, cheese and charcuterie box, and special floral arrangement. 

Maddie’s Promise is named in honor of Maddie McCoy, an energetic 11-year-old girl from Hingham who passed away in 2019 of Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer. “She was a bright, loving, active child who played soccer, competed in gymnastics and was just busy living her life surrounded by friends,” says Ann McCoy, Maddie’s mother. “When she passed away in May 2019, it was her friends and their parents who rallied to our support and were really the force behind creation of Maddie’s Promise. Pediatric cancer research is woefully underfunded, and gets only about four percent of public research funds dedicated to it annually. “An Evening of Promise” is a fun way to raise the money we need to push forward creative research so that children who never had the chance to know Maddie might still feel the impact of her life and love.” 

Hosted by Hingham broadcast personality Ally Donnelly, “An Evening of Promise” includes performances by the band “Back Nine” and Comedian Johnny P, a research update  from Dr. Charles Keller of Children’s Cancer Therapy Development Institute, and personal

stories of inspiration. In addition, there will be raffles for a Derby Street basket, a craft beer basket and others, as well as a silent auction for a weekend getaway on Cape Cod, and a round of golf at Black Rock Country Club.
